3...2...1 - the cow is auctioned off
Once a month, a cattle auction is held in the Burgdorf market hall after work, when the farmers have done most of their day's work. Farmer Koni welcomes you to the auction and explains how it works, what is important for the cow to fetch a good price for the seller and why such a cattle auction is also an important social event for the farmers.
Auction procedure
From 5 p.m., the cows are delivered and neatly dressed up. From 7 p.m., the animals are then inspected by farmers and cattle dealers from all regions of Switzerland who are interested in buying them. A handbook with all the details about the cow provides the necessary information about the animal. Most of the cows traded are Holstein cows, which are typical of the Emmental region. Did you also know that a cow can be returned for nine days after purchase?
Culinary delights on site
We recommend that you arrive around 6 pm. You will have the opportunity to enjoy an aperitif or dinner on site. You will also get to talk to the farmers and cattle traders, learn lots of interesting facts about the world of agriculture, where our food comes from, how much work and passion goes into it and begin to understand how cow trading works. For groups of more than 15 people, two farmers will accompany your team.
