Let yourself be guided through a landscape that has been dominated by olive groves since ancient times and has now been replanted.

Walk through the grove

Near Lugano, between Castagnola and Gandria, the Olive Tree Trail awaits you. Stroll through a beautiful landscape where new olive trees have been planted among the remains of ancient olive groves. In the shade of the young grove, enjoy the magnificent view over Lake Lugano and learn many interesting facts about the region and olive growing. The path extends over 3.5 km and is easily accessible for young and old.

The Olive Tree Trail

The Olive Tree Trail is an initiative of the Associazione Amici dell'Olivo (Olive Friends Association). This association has been working to revitalize the area, which has been planted with olive trees since ancient times, with a marked path and information panels that provide information about the olive tree and its products.

Two sequence examples

Program A (3 hours)
Route: Lugano - Gandria - Castagnola - Lugano
You go by boat from Lugano to Gandria. Sightseeing of the village centre of Gandria. Walk through the olive groves and return from Castagnola to Lugano by boat.

Program B (5 hours)
Route: Lugano - Gandria - Cantine di Gandria (Customs Museum) - Lugano
You go by boat from Lugano to Gandria and visit the village centre of Gandria. After the walk through the olive groves you will go by boat to the customs museum. After the visit you will return by boat to Lugano. The Customs Museum, popularly known as the Smuggler's Museum, was first opened to the public in 1949. This museum was born from an idea by Angelo Gianola, a Ticino border guard officer. The Customs Museum is located in the former customs office on the lake in Cantine di Gandria, opposite Gandria.

If you wish, you can have a small aperitif with prosecco or orange juice and nibbles served on the ship.

Fancy some more olives?

Has the walk along the olive tree path inspired you to enjoy olives even more? Combine the guided tour with a pasta workshop in the grotto.
