The coffee roastery
Have you ever seen the inside of a coffee roasting plant? You have the opportunity to do so in the Birsfelden area of the basellands. Since 1992 the Birsfelders have been pioneers in the promotion of coffee from organic farming. The coffee specialists pay producers prices far above the stock market prices and offer Swiss customers a wide range of products such as organic and Max Havelaar certified coffee.
First of all, you will roast green coffee at the coffee importer under expert guidance. The carbohydrates contained in the green coffee caramelise at a temperature of 170 to 190 °C, producing the decisive aromatic substances. The optimum roasting temperatures and times are important factors in this process. The individual needs of the consumer are met by mixing two or more varieties together.
After roasting, the coffee specialists introduce you to the "fair coffee trade". The importers in the Basel region maintain direct contact with the producers. For example, they visit suppliers in the Mexican Zapatista region, who now regularly deliver containers to Birsfelden. Film documents show not only how the harvest is done, but also how the small farmers in Mexico live and think.
Last but not least, you can taste different types of coffee and choose your personal favourites.
