Fascinating underworld
The Nidlenloch in Weissenstein, Solothurn's local mountain, is one of the most popular non-show caves in Switzerland. The tour leads through the corridors and halls of the 7.5 km long Nidlenloch. The tour takes you to places with such euphonious names as "Irrgang", "Labyrinth", "Trockensee" and "Helveterhalle".
Requirements and conditions
The Nidlenloch is largely dry and in many places equipped with ladders. It can be climbed without climbing material and does not require any special technical skills. Anyone who can climb a tree and crawl under a desk without claustrophobia is well equipped for the Nidlenloch. There are optimal conditions for the tour all year round in all weathers. You will climb down in groups of max. 12 people, accompanied by qualified cave guides from the SSH (Swiss School of Caving Hölloch). The cave is only accessible from Wednesday to Sunday.
Aperitif and Rösti at the end
How about a Survivor drink at the cave exit? With champagne or a sip of cherry you can toast to a successful cave tour. After the tour, treat yourself to the legendary Rösti on the Hintere Weissenstein.
Where does the name "Nidlenloch" come from?
The origin of the name "Nidlenloch" is uncertain. One theory says that the name is derived from a white, pastel like mass that used to occur in the cave. According to another theory, at times when there were no refrigerators, dairy products such as butter and cream - Nidle - were stored in the front part of the cave.
